Seated in the center terrace, above and behind the piano, we had an excellent vantage point for watching his solo set, as well as hearing the unamplified Steinway grand piano. Beginning with a Jobim piece, Fred played a mixture of covers and originals that stayed mostly in the realm of melodic, arpeggiated presentation, with rhythmic quirks as introduced in his covers of Fats Waller and Thelonius Monk. Not necessarily the most challenging listener exercise, but certainly a pleasant way to spend the evening! {{tag>music Fred_Hersch Miner_Auditorium }} [[2014#March_events|Back to the calendar!]]
