## Notes

It was another typically foggy day in McLaren Park as we celebrated Jerry Garcia's Birthday with a healthy crowd of freaks! Sunday slow to rise kept us from arriving before the midpoint of the schedule, but it was still a plentiful helping of music.

Stu Allen and friends were in fine form today, whipping the crowd into a frenzy as the sun played peek-a-boo through the tendrils of fog. My favorites were _Doing That Rag_, _Alligator_ and the _Other One_ suite.

The closing set from Melvin Seals started with a pretty festive version of Stevie Wonder's _Birthday_, which abuptly segued into a few lines of _Shakedown Street_, and then just as abruptly shifted into the close of _Expressway to Your Heart_. Must have made sense to Melvin, but to me those transitions came off as rather brusque and under-rehearsed. The rest of the set was solid, but uneventful -- my favorites were _Johnny Too Bad_ and _Mystery Train_, though I should add that the ultimate pairing, _My Sisters and Brothers _ >> _Ride Mighty High_, was also pretty darn awesome. Best of all was to be grooving outdoors on a splendidly cool Sunday afternoon!
