(Jack moves to the trap set for the rest of the show) [8:09 PM first (!?) folks sneak out while the boys are still playin'] [8:15 PM FULL STOP!] [SG talks a bit] 03. [8:18 PM] ? 04. [8:34 PM] _A Love Supreme_ [set ends 8:38 PM; jack says a few words; all off; back after a few minutes to wave, then off for good; no encore] ## Performers * [Jack deJohnette](http://www.jackdejohnette.com/): drums, electronic percussion; * [Savion Glover](http://www.saviongloverproductions.com/): tap dance. ## Notes A percussion extravaganza tonight! Tough sledding if you wanted to hear much in the way of melody. I would have been happy to hear Jack spend more time with the electronics, but I won't complain about hearing him on the traps: it was quite interesting to listen to him fill space and time without the "clutter" of melodic accompanists. I was surprised that Savion seemed to focus on technical dance issues (playing call and response with Jack, for example) rather than engaging in showmanship. Given his flat black, casual attire, my guess is that he was making a sort of anti-showman statement tonight: daring the audience to consider him for his rhythmic and musical talent rather than the flash and swagger typically associated with tap dancing. Wondering about _A Love Supreme_? To me, it was VERY obvious, a rhythmic exploration of theme and variations on the ending portion of first movement, "Acknowledgement‎", of the classic Coltrane suite, tossed back and forth between the two performers, gradually diminishing in volume and drawing to a close with Savion watching Jack rattle quietly on his trap set. Back to the previous event! ☸ Up to the 2018 yearbox! ☸ Up to the 2018 event list! ☸ On to the next event!
