## Notes

Arrived at the Fox about fifteen minutes before showtime and walked in without a wait, despite the usual security setup -- nice not to have to wait for the theater of paranoia bullshit. Headed upstairs and found our seats in the upper mezzanine: better than our balcony seats for [Roger Daltrey](http://www.funfolks.net/dw/doku.php?id=2018:2018-03:2018-03-15), but it still seemed too far from stage!

Happily, one of our usher friends mentioned that the show wasn't too heavily sold, and partway through the show we moved down to front row balcony. Much better, even with the view-obstructing safety rail!

I liked the opening set from Erika Wennerstrom -- I'd go see her again, with or without a band -- and I liked the accompaniment. My seat-neighbor complained at the end that there were "too many whale songs" -- I guess he didn't like Laura's slide guitar work -- but I thought she was good. Maybe he felt like he was obligated to make a snide comment about a woman playing lead guitar, I dunno.

The Devil Makes Three came on promptly at 9 PM, and proceeded to raise the roof with their acoustic-based repertoire of "drinking" tunes. I'm not convinced that they needed to add a drummer and utility player -- neither of whom got introduced -- but I can guess that someone like an under assistant west coast promo man has been pushing them towards some vision of big commercial success that "requires" certain changes. I hope they avoid the giant bug-zapper as they fly towards that light!

Overall, I think I liked [last year's set](http://www.funfolks.net/dw/doku.php?id=2017:2017-05:2017-05-28-5) in Aptos a bit better ... I think they must have been extra psyched up to be playing as festival headline for a hometown crowd. Or maybe I was just in a better mood. The former show was certainly a more intense experience, but that's likely just the difference between a balcony seat and a GA spot just beyond the scrum of the mosh pit!
