Notes

Traffic between SF and Los Altos was pretty light tonight, with only the wet drippy fog making the drive less than ideal. Anyways, only took about 45 minutes, and we got a good parking spot on our first pass through the neighborhood, sweet! It's still damp and wet out, but we're prepared – can't go out in SF without the black leather coat! – and the wind isn't whipping nearly as bad as it gets on some days. Nice to get to the venue without having to stress about the time.

Eventually things got going for tonight's show, with a lengthy introduction from Karim, complete with a lame non-apology for the chaos that was about to occur (no dancing in front or in your seats, only in the aisles). This was followed with a second introduction by XXX, who didn't really say much except to explain why he loved Tinariwen. And with that, the band entered and whisked us off to the wide open psychic space of the Sahara Desert.

I have no idea what songs were played. Or whether I properly caught them all in the timing given above. No introduction of the musicians took place, and with the constant swapping of guitars, singers, hand percussion and harmony singing, I couldn't keep track of any sort of credit in that department either, so the personnel detail listed above should be regarded only as a sort of general outline as to the nature of the event.

Heck, I couldn't even tell for sure when the songs started, as a typical transition went something like this: band comes to halt, the crowd erupts in applause. One or more of the leaders swap place, possibly swapping instruments too. The new leader begins tuning or strumming – hard to tell which – possibly also humming or singing, and then sooner or later the bass player or percussionist would join in, followed by the other musicians. Very loose!
