Notes

While I wasn't entirely enthusiastic about a tribute to the 1958-ish Flatt-Scruggs band, I was enough of a slug-mind to be inclined to stay in place at the Banjo Stage instead of hauling off elsewhere no matter who was on the bill, and in retrospect, I'm really glad that I caught this set. For one thing, I was surprised that I knew quite a bit of the repertoire already, even though I don't recall owning any albums from that particular iteration of that band – without checking, my guess is that I have one or more greatest hits packages at best. Secondly, staying to listen gave me a chance to hear some all-star pickers far removed from their usual haunts around Nashville, which is one of the big blessings of HSB – the chance to see and hear one-off or seldom-round-here gigs in the friendly environment of Golden Gate Park.

Have I mentioned yet how grateful I am to be able to enjoy this grand party every year? And how happy I am that the crowd seems to be reverting back to the regular norcal mellow instead of the amped up and crazy scene of a few years back? Three cheers for the crew involved in making this party happen. Long live the memory of Warren Hellman!
