Notes

Pretty light attendance tonight – with the balcony closed, I'd say the rest of the house wasn't much more than 3/4 full. Too bad! Cyrille is a great singer, and she put on a fine show with her band tonight.

I thought it started off great, but Blackbird and Off the Wall didn't really do it for me, and I felt additionally let down with the original tunes that came up later in the set.

Guess that makes me a nostalgia freak, right? I'd rather hear the band wail on timeless classics than shuffle their way through new pseudo-pop that hints at striving after that vein that Norah Jones struck gold with.

Tania Maria's Yatra Ta was an unexpected treat; without Cyrille's back announce afterwards I wouldn't have known the title (given that it's a wordless, scat-vocal only tune, I hadn't jotted anything that would help me ID it).

Today's band was darn good, but I missed the guitarist from last summer's show; Wayne Tucker's trumpet was a fine substitute, but gypsy swing rhythms? Nah, can't do that on a trumpet.
