Notes

It's always fun to see the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra (yeah, I know they rebranded a long time ago, but the new name is awkwardly phrased, so I stick with the original, or LCJO for short), and tonight's gig was no exception. It was good to see that the house was reasonably full – just a smattering of empty seats here and there.

I was surprised to see several substitutions in the performers from the canonical list published by SFJAZZ: either they're slackin' or bad ol' Omicron induced some last-minute changes. Wynton made sure to name everybody at least once, but I couldn't get everything down – it's too hard to write fast in the dark (or rather, I can do it, but the result is an illegible scribble!). Hopefully I've got it figured out right after reviewing Friday night's live stream. It's got to be a terrifying thrill for a newb to get the call to come join the band: how can you possibly be prepared to play a book as wide and deep as that toured by LCJO? I guess that's what separates the pros from the slackers! I think every single one of them was given solo time at some point during the evening.

At about 80 minutes of music, I thought tonight's concert was kinda short, but it seems like 80-90 min is the new standard – maybe there's a health department ruling about that? I was certainly ready to dance for another ten or twenty minutes…

You can watch Mendizorrotza Swing from the FL stream thanks Wynton's crew, who posted it here.
