Notes

Had a leisurely pre-show dinner in South with mom and her friend Monique. Everything was tasty, but not quite what I was looking for, meal-wise. Can't really put my finger on why I felt dissatisfied; maybe just being jaded? Because it was good but not WOW? In any case, it was nice to try once; next time I have a feeling I'll be getting the deviled eggs!

As RK noted in his introduction, we got two substitutions tonight: Andre Hayward subbed for Vincent Gardner and Paul Nedzela subbed for Joe Temperly. The first set was pretty darn good. Wynton was warm and friendly, introducing every tune, and calling out the soloists for extra acclaim during the breaks. As always, I was knocked out. These guys deserve every bit of their astronomical salaries, and it's a shame that the cultural elite of our country don't have the will or wherewithal to support equivalent institutions in every major city. Of course if they drew attendance like pro sports that situation might be more likely to change. On a sartorial note, I observed that each section - rhythm, sky blue; trumpets, magenta; trombones, red; saxes, navy blue – had differently shaded ties. Clever!

Second set was just as compelling. Makes me kinda sad that I'm missing the other four shows of this run (especially since they're performing different repertoire for each one), but you can't see everything…

Back to the calendar!
