Notes

Whoa! This section is incomplete for now, sorry!

Slow start this morning means that we arrived a little late, perhaps 10 or 15 minutes after the party got going with Moksha in the early afternoon. Scorching hot today, as expected, high somewhere in the upper 90's, but not all that bad hiding out under the oak trees, especially when the breeze was blowing.

With the departure of Sam (lead singer and saxophone), Moksha seems to have taken a turn back towards cranking out long techno-funk jams. Kinda fun, but better when intercut with other tunes – for variety, right? The long closing jam was pretty fun, especially the surprise of hearing the melody morph from one tune to the next. The band was definitely psyched to show off that medley, and I heard the genesis story – that the medley was put together for a burning man-style fire festival happening in Las Vegas where the band head-lined in front of some 40k partiers – from more than one of them as we hung out later in the day.

After a dinner break, the party continued with a fine set of Little Feat favorites from Paul and Fred. Eschewing acoustic this time, the duo managed to stir up a ruckus despite lacking any sort of rhythm section to lay down the beat. I think my favorites from the set were Down on the Farm and Gold Tooth Blues – the latter of which Fred mentioned as being a big hit in 193x.

Seemed to me like the Suspects played a pretty short set tonight, but partly that's due to stretching out the tunes they did, and partly to making time work for a late set too. Anyways, I guess I was slacking at the start of the set, 'cuz I didn't get around to writing down anything there … hopefully someone else was paying attention and can fill me in later…

The final set of the night, combining the Suspects with Paul & Fred, was pretty darn good. Hard to pick out a highlight there, as the whole thing was just insanely great.

Saw a black bear run across the driveway on our way out tonight, cool! (Makes me glad to be glamping at the Lake Marina Inn instead of pitching a tent under the trees on the ranch!)
