Notes

Kind of an odd format tonight – one long almost continuous set of music, opening with a relatively brief solo alap from Jayanti on veena, then numerous episodes of solo, duo and trio performance. While a few familiar episodes occurred – Zakir playing blues riffs, doing a drum talk section, and the three tossing twos and fours around – for the most part I found the presentation to be unfamiliar – I couldn't predict what would come next. Still, what does it matter? All three gave virtuoso turns throughout the night, and by the midway point, I was more than satisfied. Which prompts me to mention my dissatisfaction with the single set format, since it took away an opportunity to get up and stretch and process the initial experience and reset the ears for additional listening. Oh well. Sometimes you gotta suffer to appreciate great art!

Wish I could come back one of the other nights of this run, but our schedule doesn't allow it, so I'll have to rely on the reports of other folks to tell me what I missed.
