Notes

Tonight was really fun! What with the abundance of singers present, we got quite a variety of tunes on the setlist. It was interesting hearing Lesh take on all of the non-dead tunes for a change, all the more so for the novelty of hearing new material myself! Having a new mix of players to take on the core Dead repertoire was also fun. The band did a fine job with the Bakersfield-influenced material – as might be guessed from the musicians varied backgrounds playing in other contexts – and the other revisions were plenty cool too.

Surprising me, the Satie cover segued into a bouncy version of China Cat Sunflower rather than Eyes of the World (as occurred on June 13, earlier this year, which in turn rolled on into the rich harmonies of I Know You Rider. Very nice!

Somehow I was able to exert a bit of willpower and refrain from grabbing a cake-pop or three during the late-mid-set celebration break. They looked very tempting, and all reports indicate that they were quite yummy. Maybe next time!

Reuben and Cerise was a nice treat too, but I'll cop to being a bit bored with the current iteration of the Other One – with the frenzied jamming and rumbling solo bass runs almost entirely relegated to the sidelines, there's not enough meat left to the tune for me to sink my teeth into. Maybe I need to let go of the past and be happy that the band is throwing out some old bones for us to worry, I dunno. Sometimes innovative renditions of old standards work out, other times they don't.

Anyways, it was a fun time tonight, and I'm glad we got to hear it! Hopefully we'll be able to share many more birthday celebration with Levi as the future unfolds
