Notes

Hot Diggity Dog, they really turned it on tonight! I'm way glad to have made the trip; it's just what the doctor ordered! I'm sure that all the picky old fans will have one thing or another to quibble about regarding tonight's show, but I was so happy to be dancing back in the dragons throat that I ain't gonna say nothin bad about it.

Tonight's opening duo fit a little better with my frame of mind, offering a solid dose of acoustic blues to get the feet a-shuffling. Throwing in choice covers of Dylan, the Dead, and Leon Russell among their original and otherwise unidentified oldies was a great way to suck in the crowd and get them amped up for the main event.

Following a short break, Josh introduced “the Motherf#@kin' Radiators” and they proceeded to whip out the first big surprise of the night, a mash up of lyrics from Jimi Hendrix' Come On, Pt One and Willie Dixon's Wang Dang Doodle played over a musical bed reminiscent of Da Cuckoo or Total Evaporation. To me, the confusion and disorientation produced by hearing this new derangement was a deliciously exhilarating experience. Bravo! My notes indicated that Ed inserted lines from other tunes as well, but I wasn't quick enough to recognize those, so until I can give a careful listen to the recording (get yours from Live Downloads today!, I guess I'll remain ignorant.

Ed was messing with us again later in the first set by tweaking the lyrics in the Pass Out the Hatchets medley, relating that he wanted to “play with your puppycat.” Too hip! Another step on puppycat's rise to world domination!

Following set break, we witnessed the next surprise of the weekend: George Porter, Jr sitting in on the first two tunes instead of Reggie. I know lots of folks will claim that they only like to take their radiation treatment straight, but I think you'd be a fool to turn your tail on such gems as the boys laid down with George tonight. Yippie kai yai yippee yippee yay! Ain't no battle over that choice in my mind.

The rest of the set was quite strong – the boys were certainly on overdrive as they tore up the night with one smash after another. I've heard that you can't take it with you when you're gone, so you better get it while you can. Such is the impulse that drove me to New Orleans this weekend, and every fiber of my being resonated with the righteousness of that decision.
