Notes

It was tough to get going this morning – guess I needed some extra recovery time from last night's show – and the consequent slog home in somewhat heavy traffic was simply exhausting. We made it home alright, but had only ten or twenty minutes to unpack and then get ready for tonight before it was time to go. Pulling out of the garage, the car is a little grumpy, and as we cruise on over to Mark K's place, the “service engine” light comes up. “Cap'n, I canna give ye any more power” she seems to be saying. The ride to Mark's is mostly downhill, but there are enough dips and doodles to worry us about making it even that small distance. Guess we need a new plan! Mark graciously agrees to drive, so we leave the BMW parked at his house and continue our trek down to Mountain View.

We get to the Dispoto's place without incident, arriving just as the party is getting underway. Yay! Time to eat and socialize and relax a bit before the big party. The crowd was a little smaller than last year's Fare Thee Well blowout, but that just made it easier to visit with everyone individually. Monk wins the

Wow, the contrast between riding the rail (last night) and being just a small pip in the sea of heads (tonight) is tough to swallow. I might not have wanted to spend big bucks when tickets went on sale, but right now, I realize that my stinginess is negatively impacting my potential for happiness. The guys onstage a tiny, and the huge screen is a constant distraction, since it's much easier to follow the larger-sized action shown there. Likewise, the crowd spread out below us is another constant distraction. They're having lot's of fun, but I don't wanna see it, I'm here for the music!

Help on the Way to open the show was an exciting choice – first time this tour in that spot – and the subsequent segue into Shakedown was another happy surprise. Quibblers might note that the segue wasn't particularly smooth, but I'll concede that it was better than the majority of Weir's transition decisions. My main gripe would be that the tune didn't really dance … the pace was just too slow. Likewise, Cassidy wasn't paired with much fleet-fingered work either, and the extended jams couldn't hold my attention – too much competition from the partying crowd, I guess. In fact, at fourteen minutes, Cassidy dragged on so long that even though I knew Standing on the Moon was going to be another slow tune, by the time it arrived, I was happy just to hear something different. Thanks John!

After the pair of country-flavored tunes, Weir closed off the circle by signaling the band to revisit the ending bars of Slipknot, squeezing in ten or twenty seconds of that transition before the initial gallop of Franklin's Tower. Coming from a full stop, this seemed ridiculous to me. Why not just start with the gallop? Yet another example of the mysterious ways of Mr. Weir.

Whoa! This section is incomplete for now, sorry!
