Notes

I was intrigued during the pandemic when a Jacob Collier show was booked into the Warfield and then sold out quickly: who is this dude? Being an old fart, it's really hard to keep up with all the new channels of communication, and I still have no idea how he became that popular. With that back story, I was really surprised to see that SFJAZZ booked him into the much smaller Miner Aud; maybe his choices to play the smaller venue was curiosity about the place, gained from his interaction with other musicians? Hard to know without an interview out something else that explains! In any event, I'm psyched to see his show, and I hope I enjoy it!

My first surprise upon entering the hall tonight was seeing a nearly empty stage: no instruments, no amps, just an open-topped Steinway grand piano with two floor monitors aimed at the piano bench. Hmmn. That's totally different from anything I've watched online: this is going to be interesting!

Once the show begins, I'm even more surprised that JC performs a set where I can identify all of the tunes. Crazy! He made an off-hand comment near the start of the show about planning to play good songs (that he hadn't written), and he made true on that plan. Very cool.

Go see him if you get the chance!
