One of the hottest new music events of the year! Javanese hat gongs,
African talking drums, South American cuicas, ships’ bells . . . This
concert unites eight of the Bay Area’s finest percussionists in
celebrating the emergence of percussion as a vitalizing force in new
music. Featured are Chou Wen-chung’s exquisite Echoes from the Gorge,
inspired by Chinese calligraphy, a recently rediscovered quartet by Bay
Area legend, Lou Harrison, and the dynamic Polarization by one of
Japan’s most exciting young voices, Karen Tanaka. Also a world premiere
duo by San Francisco’s own Richard Festinger, and Irwin Bazelon’s
high-octane Propulsions for seven percussionists utilizing just about
every instrument under the sun. Not to be missed!

Don''t miss the San Francisco debut of pianist Steven Osborne,1997
winner of the prestigious Naumburg Competition. A native of Scotland,
Osborne's career has included performances with the BBC Philharmonic,
Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Academy of St.
Martin-in-the-Fields as well as solo recitals at New York's Alice Tully
Hall, London's Wigmore Hall and the Kennedy Center.

In a review of a recent New York performance, the New York Times said
Osborne was "both a technically accomplished pianist and a thoughtful,
sensitive musician…Mr. Osborne, obviously enthralled by the music, gave
a commanding and vibrantly imaginative performance, never faltering in
stamina, concentration and inspiration."
