Notes

Had a great time tonight, even if the show might not have been the mind melter reported from the previous two nights. The crowd was pressed in a little closer than normal, but absent drunken idiots crashing through, this wasn't necessarily a problem, just cozy!

The list from Set One was full of surprises – I didn't really expect to hear any of the tunes that they played – consequently, I was a happy boy at set break!

Set Two wasn't quite so unpredictable, and except for the novelty of hearing this band work it's way through the war horses on the list, I don't know that there's too much to recommend as far as searching out a recording. Stanley's insertion of a bit of Bolero into the St. Stephen jam was certainly novel, but the entire episode probably lasted less than a minute or so before he realized that the band wasn't going to follow him out onto that path. Too bad, as that would really have been something new to write about!

Ending the show (and the weekend) with Steve Goodman's classic City of New Orleans was certainly a departure from the norm, and a welcome one at that. Stanley's vocal lead was at least as strong as Phil's, and the crowd was totally into the singalong chorus at the end, making for a good happy, participatory vibe to wrap things up.

It would have been nice to see and hear the other shows from the start of this run, but until we find ways to be in two places at the same time, I'll have to settle for time-and-place-shifting via the magic of YouTube and the audio recordings offered at the merch table.
