Notes

The band certainly seemed to be firing on all four cylinders from the get go tonight. I'd say my favorites were the Still Dreaming, Mopti and Broken Shadows. The opener, which sounded to me as if it borrows heavily from Ornette's classic, Lonely Woman, is actually a new tune by Joshua Redman. Well blow me down! I had both of the first two tunes pegged as Ornette originals until Joshua corrected me with his back announcement. Mopti lopes along with a steady african-influenced pulse in the bass while the other three players take turns going nuts. Lotsa fun! And as promised by Joshua, Broken Shadows was lusciously beautiful – a great reminder that Ornette tunes don't always feature jagged, jangly melodies!

Given that only two tunes overlapped against last night's setlist (thanks for sharing Mark!), I'm really curious to hear what gets played over the next two nights too. Hopefully other jazz cats will be on the prowl and taking notes!

And it's good to know that Joshua likes to mix things up! Maybe next time he comes around I'll try and catch two consecutive nights.
