Notes

With our SFJAZZ Collective show running through two solid sets, we ended up missing at least half of the first set. I copied things from the setlist to fill in the gap, but honestly, the only tunes there I'm sure that they did were Smokin' Hole and I'm Walkin', since folks mentioned them to me during break. Dew and Papaya were completely off the hook, and I seem to have tweaked my neck real good, trying to shake it on out in time to the shredding onstage. Anyways, I was, uh, somewhat liquidated at the time, so I didn't really discover the damage until mid way through tomorrow morning's jujitsu class when I realized I was having trouble getting up off the floor after being on the receiving end of some friendly abuse. Sometimes getting old sucks!

The second set started out with a truly deranged mashup version of NLYFGO, with the expected lyrics sung over another tune – I thought it was Jimmy Smith's Back at the Chicken Shack, but the setlist says “Blue Monkey” so for now I'm stumped! Guess I should have quizzed one of the musicians about it, but I failed to follow up on that chance, so for now we'll have to wait to hear those multitracks to find an answer!

Looking back at the list, every single one of the second set tunes is one that makes me think “hot dog, that was sweet!” Kinda hard to pick a favorite, but I'll succumb to the cheese factor and name Solitary Man as the epic choice of the night. Hard to go wrong with a Neil Diamond cover, right?
