Notes

Holiday weekends around SF tend to the schizophrenic: either they're really quiet, or totally crazy. Happily, this one seems to have tilted towards the former: it took us barely 30 min to drive over to the Mission, and we found a parking spot only a block from the Chapel. Hoo-yah! Walked into the club at around 8:30 to find it mostly empty, but happily, a few friends were present, so we shot the breeze for a half hour until the opening act, Danny James and pals, took the stage. I'd previewed his latest album, Pear, so I had a good idea what to expect, and they came close to hitting that mark. Strangely, I preferred the album to the live set (something that seems quite unusual for me to write), but it's not like the set was bad in any way, only that I was darn excited to hear the mighty Q, so I was ready for the opener to finished their set after only three or four songs. At set break Ting moved up to a spot on the rail, right in front of Terry, and after deciding that the room's musical sweet spot was being filled with too many talkers, I moved up to a spot just behind her and to the outside – still on the rail, due to the stairs coming off stage right, but directly in line with the center-aimed vocal PA rather than inside of it's broadcast fan.

And the Q? They stepped up and whacked it out of the park. Abetted by the joyous delivery and the goofy lyrics, I had more fun at this show than any other in a long while. Even slow songs, like Dummy and Remember Your Name and Address had me grinning and tapping my feet. Makes me think I should have been paying enough attention to see some of Terry's quartet shows over the years that NRBQ was in hibernation. I hope they come back soon!
