Notes

With a late start on our transportation to the game, all the slack space in the night's schedule collapsed into a muddle of good intentions. We lucked out meeting TC at the Public House in that we were able to scare up a free table pretty darn quick, but the large crowd kept service kinda slow, which meant that it was nigh on 7 PM by the time we entered the ballpark – just in time to join the crush of 43k+ like-minded fans.

Heading up to the very top of the stadium to collect our promo shirts (add link to pic?), we watched Moonalice atop the visitor's dugout while waiting in line. Made it to the front to find out that they were already out of S and XL shorts there, so TC and I hustled off to the next corner of the stadium in order try our luck at the alternate pickup point while Ting headed down to our seats for the rest of the pre-game activities. Consequently, I missed Mickey and Billy tossing out the first pitch – allegedly a spitball – and caught only scattered glimpses of Sunshine doing an acapella rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. On the plus side, I did pick up that XL that I was looking for, so I guess it wasn't just a fool's errand.

As for the game, there's not a lot of positive news to report. Vogelsong gave up a base hit and a homer to the first two batters, and though he settled down a bit thereafter, it #looked# like he was really struggling to keep a lid on the White Sox – a team that shouldn't have given them as much trouble IMHO. Offensively, Pence slammed a triple to right field for his first at bat, but the White Sox pitcher, Sales, seemed to have the home boys baffled after that, ringing up K after K – twelve in all over eight shutout innings. Darn hard to win the game if you can't get on base!

The Giants had much better luck against the Sox reliever in the bottom of the ninth, putting a couple hits together and tying the score to send the game into extra innings. Finally! Something to get the home crowd excited about! Unfortunately, Casilla gave up a run in the 10th on a two-out single, and when the Giants went down 1_2-3, that was all she wrote!

Check out video and audio of the performances, archived on the Moonalice website

Sadly, the game also featured numerous tributes to Robin Williams, who died the preceding day. John Shea posted an article on that aspect of the game on SFGate.
