the Tasting

Nice bike ride across town to the location – a snazzed up warehouse in Dogpatch. Much comfier than the stuffy basement of the Regency from last week's Macallan tasting – at present, I'm lounging in a well-padded arm chair, casting thirsty glances at the personal tasting table set up in front of me with three small drams.

Got a couple pours tonight while waiting for the big show. Not quite as many orderves to nibble on as at Macallan's party, but I did show up about 20 minutes late, and the refills of whisky from the open bar washed away any complaints I might make in that regard.

Our host tonight has a fine handlebar mustache, but he sounds like a California boy (@theGlenlivetJG) – and he later mentions that he lives here in SF – so chalk up a point to Macallan for bringing a Scotsman with a friendly brogue as brand ambassador.

Tasting-wise, it looks like we have three pours to enjoy tonight. JG soon reveals that these are the 12-, 15- and 18-year old expressions of Glenlivet. As we've already been drinking the 12, I'm mildly disappointed to learn about the repeat, but hey, it's free, so I shan't be too loud complaining about it.

Interesting that the founder of Glenlivet, George Smith, looks to be English by his pasty appearance and undistinguished surname. Gotta look up that history – could be fun for needling some of those Scots!

Eventually, it was time to savor the wee pours allotted to us. Yum! Could they have been smaller? Not if we were to follow the instruction to taste at least three times, unless “taste” means “wet the lips without allowing more than a drop of oily nectar to reach the tongue”. Am I complaining? Och, yeah, a wee bit! I was hoping for just a bit more, but beggars can't be choosers, can they?

Overall, it was a fine way to kill a free Tuesday night, particularly for the inclusion of fine weather for biking out there from the Marina, then back into downtown to catch BART, and a bit more to roll from MacArthur up to Rockridge where I'd parked. Yeah, a fine night!
