Notes

Has a great time at tonight's show, starting off with the loose, easy-going vibe of my fellow Terrapin patrons: it's always easier to enjoy events where outsole aren't stepping on your toes to move around! The Animals started off nicely, building up steam as the set ran on, and hitting full speed as Kyle led them through a thoroughly funky take on Billy Preston's classic tune, Will it go round in circles. The segue into Tax Man was delicious – until Steve Kicked in with the bass line, I thought it was going to be Tomorrow Never knows …must be something about that 1966 Revolver sound that had me bouncing up and down to the beat! Utterly undeniable – as if the universe manifests its will in my bones: I AM COMMANDING YOU TO DANCE! Oh yeah, Randy was a happy boy right then!

And so it went. The band played, the crowd danced, and we all sang together during the out choruses of the Harder They Come. Lot's more fun than the usual take on cover tunes, and infinitely preferable to a poke in the eye with a stick!

The second set seemed less rambling than I expected, probably because the primary variation was the swapping in and out of the drummers. Guess the Lesh boys weren't on call tonight. Seemed a little odd to me that Pete L played during the first set but not the second, but I can't say I have any clue how those shots are called; all I can do is observe and comment. And it was fun having different vocal leads throughout the set (even if Pete didn't get the call… I was hopin' and prayin' but the Lord must not have been listening right then).

The second set was good, but didn't hit the top of the freak-o-meter tonight; merely excellent. My favorite was Wild Horses, made all the more poignant as Jen gradually grew more and more hoarse through the tune, finishing the final choruses with a raspy whisper. Good job soldiering through, I hope it didn't hurt too bad in the morning! Lebo claimed it's evidence that she was having too much fun at Jazz Fest last weekend… Seems plausible to me! G.D.T.R.F.B. was notable for the encore in that each of the vocalists: Kyle, Lebo and Steve, took pains to personalize the verses. So instead of the tried and true old lines about “going where the water tastes like wine”, we got to hear about “playing Terrapin where the folks all dance so fine”, and so on. Very cute! Could have gone on a little longer, but it's probably best to cut things off before the inspiration runs out, no?

Anyways, I'm real glaD to have caught tonight's show, and I look forward to the Ramble with Peter Rowan scheduled later this month.
