Notes

Didn't hear any explanation by Dave Livolsi is subbing for Alphonso Johnson today, but given our late arrival, that could have been covered during the band introductions at the start of the set. Hopefully we only missed a single tune … guess I should have checked with some of our neighbors, doh!

Perfect weather today – warm and sunny, but not too hot – downright pleasant hanging out in the shade in front of the main stage. We start out standing over on the margins at stage left, but within a song or two I spot folks leaving their seats, and just like that we have prime seats, dead center, about 7 rows back. Thank you Jesus!

I have a hard time recognizing Jack Straw when they begin, and after a moment or two, realize that part my confusion is that Chris Smith is playing his part with the classic Moog VCO tone I associate with ELP's Lucky Man. So my mind keeps thinking ELP, when I know I'm supposed to be hearing a Grateful Dead tune instead. Boggling!

Sadly, the overall sound mix was really quite murky, and there was plenty of (presumably unintended) distortion on the keyboards whenever they got too loud compared to the rest of the mix. I'm gonna assume that while Dan Healy was present to goof off and tell stories, he wasn't responsible for the mix…

Despite all that, it was a fun set, and a great way to start the day!
