Notes

I really enjoyed tonight's gig.

Starting off with a fabulous dinner at NoPa with our friend Susan Wong certainly help set the stage, and happily, it wasn't raining too hard while we waited for the doors to open. Ting worked some kind of persuasion magic on the folks in front of us that allowed her to get the two best seats in the house: dead center, fourth row, and after she and Susan sat down, I took a spare behind them for the first set. It was quite cold sitting around for the show to start – we waited nearly an hour between the time the house opened and the music started – but with friends to visit with, things weren't so bad.

Charlie's current group seemed to focus on playing the blues. Lots of different blues styles, but almost everything seemed to head back to that standard I-V-IV pattern and all the many similar variations. I was happy as a pig in a poke! Kirk and Kasey did a fine job punctuating the tunes with their horn accents, and both contributed fine solos here and there as well.

It would be interesting to see if Charlie keeps this band together for more than one tour … I'd like to hear them again!

I suppose it's possible that I could have made a few semi-educated guesses about the proper song titles, but at the time the show went down, I was concentrating hard on overcoming the sore throat that was coming on, and resisting the urge to give in to any coughing fits. Not the best head-space for paying attention to identifying the melody lines! Maybe someone smart will help out and fill things in later on.
