In retrospect, it seemed rather odd that SFJAZZ would host a show of Gospel blues tunes from a pair of Jewish performers, but I suppose the venue is exactly right for finding a quiet audience of good listeners willing to participate in the expressions of sorrow and devotion that charge these tunes with spirituality. I would have liked to hear another twenty or thirty minutes, but the early shows at the lab are never very long. Probably should have bought the new album so as to get a handle on identifying those questionable tunes, another mistake!
