Notes

Yowza!

Chick's only solo performance of the year, tonight was one of those great shows that's hard to really classify. Presented without amplification of the piano, I'm really glad that I had a seat up close in the second row – all the better to focus on the magic-making in front of me! The pairing of classical and jazz/popular pieces in the first half was really cool … even if Monk didn't make it onto the list (awww, I feel cheated!). And the playfulness of the second half was something really rare … I don't recall ever seeing something like that at a show before. Did it work? Well yeah, well enough! Hopefully the show was a big enough success that they'll bring him back next year for a reprise gig!
