Notes

Despite being wiped out from a long tough week of work, it was a pleasure and delight to witness Yuko Mabuchi in her SF debut. She was quite excited to be playing at SFJAZZ, and her infectious energy was really uplifting. I especially enjoyed the few times that she got really carried away, practically flinging herself into the piano, sending crashes of sound and dissonant tone-clusters flying across the room while the bass and drums kept a solid pocket together for the piece to stand on. Yum!

Del Atkins played with an exquisitely fat tone that had just the slightest crispy edge – can you imagine beignet bass? – and Bob Breton consistently surprised me by tossing tasty accents on top of his solid beat-keeping. While neither of the support players were nearly as flashy or outgoing as Yuko, they were both superb, and I'd be keen to see them all again in the future.
