Snow at Funfolks Headquarters, February 24, 2023

Notes

Normally all I post about on this blog are setlists for the shows I attend, but now and then other noteworthy events occur, and this is one of 'em!

On Thursday morning, I got up around 7 AM, puttered about a little, then hustled off to Cal Berkeley to help with the YMD PE class as I've done in years past.

My car trip on Thu morning was unlike any other in my life, because it was my first time driving through snow on the way down out of the Oakland hills to the Cal campus. At FFHQ, the weather was mild – just a random snowflake here and there, and mostly dry ground, as the incoming storm had yet to hit.

A mile or so north however, it was a different story, and as I popped out from under tree cover along Grizzly Peak Boulevard, I entered a dizzying kaleidoscope of snow flurries. Cool!! It was still too warm for anything to stick to the ground, but the drive to the intersection of Claremont Ave and Fish Ranch Road was a marvel: How often do I get to drive in the snow for fun? Like never!

The weather had cleared a bit by mid morning when I drove back up the hill, and with nothing exciting to photograph, I headed inside and buried my head in work until after dark.

As the evening changed to night, the storm clouds blew in stronger and stronger, and we started to get squalls and downbursts of rain – nothing too strange in that for February, so I mostly ignored it (except when thunder and lightning crackled and lit up the sky … that was hard to ignore … and really unusual for February).

Eventually it was time to hit the sack, and while brushing my teeth I noticed that the storm had gotten suddenly quiet. Strange! Looking out the window, I saw snow flurries. Of course! Grabbing my cell phone, I filmed a minute or so to share with you. It should be fairly obvious to perceive the change as the storm changes from rain to graupel to snow – pay attention to the particle motion!
