• Wayne Shorter: soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone.

Wayne Shorter tonight was amazingly good. Crazy, out there, interstellar jazz. At one point about 45 min into the show, Brian Blade was whacking his snare drum so hard that he knocked it over and sent parts of his drum kit flying outward. And despite that, he still managed to keep the beat going, both on the other drums, as well as by bending over and playing the snare where it lay on the ground, and then picking it up and playing it wedged between his knees. Got a standing ovation from the crowd a few minutes later when the piece drew to a close.

It's entirely possible that the setlist should show eight or ten tunes instead of three, but given my unfamiliarity with his current tunes and the fact that the various sections flowed into one another, the only time I tracked was the few instances when the band came to a full stop. And as far as I recall, the entire event was wordless, with Wayne conducting the band through hand gestures.

I'd like to write more, but I'm tongue-tied. Fumble-fingered. Empty-headed. Done!
